This one was done as a submission for a show in Seattle that will be called "Breast" - the brief wasn't necessarily just about the boob as a beauty-object, but also its place in society as well as history.
Of course my mind immediately jumps to the mythological Amazons, who supposedly burned off their right breasts in order to use a bow more effectively....

I've threatened for years to start a comic, and after multiple false starts, self-flagellation, -recrimination, and procrastination I've finally started. But in an effort to light a fire under my own a$$, I'm posting the first two unlettered pages as a sort of teaser. This way I'll be too embarrassed not to continue. I'm also learning the ins and outs of my (next to) new WACOM tablet, which is daunting in its possibilities, frustrating in its newness, and way too cool not to play with more often.

Our friends Chris & Jen have a sweet little dog named Laika, who, like so many other dogs (and too many other acquaintances for me to be comfortable with), has a propensity for swallowing foreign objects. Well, this last time, said propensity has led to a mountain of vet bills that many of us are trying to alleviate in any way we can. I did these three paintings to sell in an effort to raise money to help foot some of those bills. They're small little paintings that I sent back to San Francisco before I measured them, but I think they're about 13,5 x 19cm.

I know this painting is from forever ago, but I still love it - it was a real labor of love and took me forever to complete, and I just felt like I never got any good photos of it - so when Kyla came in with her camera, I slipped this in with 'Little Gods and Monsters'

Odin

So I've saved my favorite for last - this is Odin of Norse mythology, riding his trusty (8-legged) steed, Sleipnir. This one is my fave for various reasons - painting that i was pleased with, lots of little elements coming together including a color palette that seemed to be not such a struggle for a change (although I repainted that horse too many times to count trying to get it close to what I envisioned in my mind), and really, the lightbullb and the head on a chain is just too cool - i want one for myself. Supposed to be a font of wisdom for Odin.... still makes me smile.

So that's the end of "Little Gods and Monsters" (a working title of this series that just stuck...)

Maman Brigitte (round two)

Alright, so this is my second take on Maman Brigitte and her black rooster - I liked the last painting alot, but with this one really wanted to convey a sense of movement, of action, a little less portraiture.... And I love the lil' chili peppers....
this one is on a found frame -- i have no idea what it was used for before this, but the painting itself is acrylic on a thin piece of wood - so light, and easily hung....

The Morrigan

The Morrigan is an old Irish deity, all about war and bloodshed and of course; fertility. It's interesting that so many old deities were similar blends of bloodshed and fecundity. All these new photos have been taken by a friend of mine, Kyla Hancock, who was kind enough to bring not only her mo'fessional-style camera but also her amazing self and photographic skills and take photos of the works for me. Alright, this is another one with a bit of that artist's interpretational prerogative... Mexican dieties Quetzalcoatl and his (sometimes) mother Coatlicue... of course in most representations Quetzalcoatl IS the feathered serpent, but in keeping with the spirit of this series of paintings I depicted them separately....

I love the whole idea of magic swords and 8-headed dragons, so this was a no-brainer. Admittedly influenced by Luke Skywalker and Samurai Jack, which is one of the best cartoons ever made - repeatedly gorgeous and often hilarious, as eye candy I can't think of anything else that holds a candle.... at the moment, anyway.

Because I love prosthetics, Rose McGowan, and to a lesser extent; zombies. But really, if there's one image that vies for attention with all those that were indelibly smeared on my brain while young and impressionable, it would be that of the woman with the machine gun for a leg.

Alright - this was a hard one. I worked and reworked and reworked this, but all through the process just couldn't get it right. I think the sky was the most challenging for me, and it wasn't helped by the composition. This was a real learning piece for me - and forced me to come to terms with not being happy with everything that I've done. That sometimes, a piece just won't live up to its potential, and you just have to wash your hands of it, and start over if the idea still appeals to you. So this painting is the one I had to wash my hands of. I'll post the newer (much larger) version later.

Anyway, Heget is an Egyptian deity, associated with frogs and fertility.

Tyr & Fenrir

Tyr and Fenrir - another small painting that I really like as a drawing, but once it was painted I felt it was a little static. I like how the boy's face and hair turned out alot. This legend is of course nordic, and is about how they were attempting to chain the wolf Fenrir. Odin, Tyr and others told Fenrir they were only testing to see if he had the strength to break from his bonds - and promised that if he was unable to break them, they would remove them. Fenrir - rightfully - didn't trust them, so as insurance, Tyr volunteered to put his hand in Fenrir's fearsome jaws. Well, they didn't let the wolf out of his bonds, and Tyr gave up that hand.

Maman Brigitte

yeah, I know - been forever. Well, been working on a big set of images with varying levels of success. Mostly they're legendary beings and animals they're associated with. This is one of the images that I did first, and while liking it, I think it ended up a little flat compositions-wise. Anyway, Brigitte is big in Voodoo, she's all about graveyards and drinking rum that has been so spiced with hot peppers that no human could drink it (and is known to rub it on her privates, as well, but I thought that might not be such a good picture since I'm painting her as a minor). She's symbolized by the black rooster..... this one's acrylic on found wood. 26x43cm

An Old One

So no, this isn't a recent piece - this is an old one - actually it was my first screen print. It's called "Suma" - sort of geisha meets sumo wrestler.... It was part of a set of drawings I did of "big and beautiful' women.... Took a class on screen-printing when I first moved here to Amsterdam (not really knowing anything about it) and they told us to bring in a picture. So the the dot matrix coloring was sort of an experiment on the fly, over an ink drawing that I had done for something else.
I still like her - she sort of reminds me of that really big woman dancing with the sexy Twi'lek dancer in Jabba the Hut's palace (if you didn't already know that I was a geek, I guess I just came out, as it were. I prefer to be thought of as 'adorkable', though....)

Jenny Greenteeth Gets Her Guy

I've always loved (loved, loved, loved) Mike Mignola's comic creation "Hellboy" - it took me a while to warm to it, since it started when I was still (only) embracing the Jim Lee style of drawing comics - so anything that wasn't picture perfect with all the t's crossed and i's dotted (in a drawing sense, if you get my meaning) sort of missed me. But I finally made the plunge and bought a used copy of the first TPB and instantly fell in love - with the story and with the artistry. Well, long story short, in one of his Hellboy short stories (see what I did there?) Jenny Greenteeth was featured - and for whatever reason she's just really stuck with me. Of course a part of it is Mr. Mignola's artistic interpretation of this folkloric femme fatale, hell, maybe all of it, who knows? But I instantly wanted to do my own interpratation/iteration of her. So here it is.
Somewhere along the way this painting began to be a somewhat tongue-in-cheek commentary on my own feelings of inadequacy and ugliness and being an outsider. Maybe those feelings are a little too large to be expressed by my current skill-set, so take from it what you will. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Acrylic on found wood. I'm trying to embrace a little more of my illustration influences and not try and be so literal/wannabe-photorealistic with my paint process.

Yet Another RE work - "Comin' Thru!"

I think I called this "helium icarus" before - I had been experimenting with a rougher painting style - and ended up not being too satisfied with it - obviously since I reworked it. I felt that my perspective needed a little more forcing, and also something about the composition wasn't working for me - I felt the piece was lacking focus, and the roughness I almost felt detracted from the humor that I wanted to be part and parcel. Did I go over the top with the speech bubble? Maybe. I dunno - I'm just really liking the thought of them in paintings these days.

Not New Works, but REworks

Haven't done too much in the way of posting lately - mostly because I've just been terribly lazy. It's sort of like saying I won't drink every night, or that I'll stop at one spoonful of sugar in my coffee in the mornings. Somehow, it's something that sounds totally reasonable at night when I make the decision to be better about whatever it is, but then by the light of day I just make the same old fumbles.
Well, self-recrimination aside, been re-working some old paintings that I was never truly happy with. Here's Cuddlefish one and two - now just Cuddlefish and Myh Tentacular Heart. I really felt both of them needed a lil' sumpin' sumpin', and taking my cues from manga masters and other more Western influences like Ashley Wood, decided to make use of speechbubbles and good ol' fashioned hearts. Along with reworking some of the lighting and rendering. I think they're better. Hopefully you do, too........

Siren Song - a Dyptych

I was itching to try my hand at making a dyptych, and for whatever reason this is what popped into my head. I feel like watching some cartoon long ago or maybe one of those great (not so great when you're older) Sinbad movies on a Saturday afternoon and saw this general take on the sirens. I think. Who knows, maybe I just dreamed it. But here it is, combining a love of the girl groups of motown as well as angler fish - Siren Song. I also figured that I would play with combining the comic book elements that I so often love since I was mostly drawing this one and then painting on top anyway, so that's where the skull note came from. Once again, sort of trying to figure out where drawing should stop and painting begin....

I'm pretty proud of this piece - it's acrylic on a piece of wood I found on the street - the image went through a few more cartooney iterations in my sketchbook and imagination, but in the end it turned into something a little darker than I had originally thought of. But I like it alot, and as with all paintings, it looks much better in person. I'm back to my clean-line-loving style with this one, but tried to take a page out of the Frank Frazetta handbook - he always has such an amazing way of focusing the viewer's eye, and uses both color and crispness of image towards this end. If you look at some of his paintings, you'll see that the image is only 'crisp' where he wants the eye to look. And I just thought what an amazing bit of artistry that is...... So this is my first attempt at doing something like that.....

Irona Revisited

Don't ask me why, but for whatever reason, when I was a child I loved Ritchie Rich, despite that damn dog Dollar who I actively hated. My favorite character, hands-down, was Irona. Something about her just really caught my fancy - maybe it was the red hair, the maid's uniform, or the fact that she was like the Tin Woodsman in drag - I dunno.

But she's what I was thinking of when I did this Steampunk creator and robot.....

Helium Icarus

So I've been really into the work of Ashley Wood as of late - I just think his images have such an amazing amount of energy, and despite (or maybe because of) the apparent roughness of the images, I just really love them. I've found in the past that rough paintings just didn't appeal to me as much as the more detailed work, but after looking at more artists' work, I've come to really appreciate just how much energy and thought and true skill go into some of these works that don't have the clean lines or the perfect anatomy. Somewhere I read something by an artist who was complaining that he felt that he had to choose (in his works) between perfect anatomy and the sense of motion, movement, and energy. I think that I'm finally starting to understand just what he was talking about.

I was also really trying to restrict myself in regards to the color palette - I've had no formal training, so all of this is really just trial-by-fire, and I think that in the past some of my colors have been a little too primary.

Alright, so monologue aside, I wanted to do a painting where I really tried not to get too detailed or 'clean'. I chose to redo an image that I had already used for one of my early screen prints so that I would feel less need to plan or feel like I was losing anything in an image that I already had in my head. This image was already 'safe' because I have it in pencils and screen print already, so I felt fairly ok with butchering it, if that was what happened. So here it is.

Robots

Ok, I've been a little lazy about posting, but I have been working, really I have! But with the light being so bad around Amsterdam these days - as in non-existent, so cloudy, you can positively feel people yearning for Spring - it's been difficult to even think about taking a photo. But with the onset of some sunnier - if not warmer - weather, I had the chance to beg Steven to take some semi-decent photos for me. I'm not saying they're perfect, but at least they were taken by a hand that doesn't have the tendency to shake quite as much as my own....

So as for these little Robots, I've just been wanting to do some sketches with paint - didn't want to put too much planning into it, just wanted some fun images that could be plentiful and that didn't involve pouring my heart and soul into so I felt like I could finish one in a couple of hours instead of my normal agonized process which takes a week or four..... here are the first three.....

they're all 5 x 7 inches, all acrylic, no planning, just sketching with paint.......

Harlot Trampling

So this one is another acrylic with a little bit of ink over the top. Once again, I'm trying to be more daring in regards to light and shadow, and experiment with the colors a little more. Color theory is so deceptively difficult. I'm also trying to play around with forced perspective more in my drawings - lately I've become extremely enamored of Eric Canete's work, and one of the big reasons for that is just his astounding perspective. Was Kirk Douglas handsome?

I'm sure it's obvious to everyone that this was inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I always loved the idea of that story. The only thing that ever really disappointed me about it was that lack of a female character and also just the loss of Captain Nemo and his amazing submarine at the end. I mean, I know the loss was sort of the point of the story, keeping this amazing technology out of the hands of barbarous humankind because really, people just can't be trusted to use anything responsibly. Ever.
Anyway, I won't get all philosophical and start some diatribe about why this is or isn't true. This is all acrylic, with a little bit of ink over the top. I'm happy with this for the most part, I think that it's one of the first paintings I've done where I've played to my strengths in regards to drawing.... And I'm still trying to be better about the lighting; you know, making it interesting and not using 'sculpting light' for everything...

Snowball's Chance

Amsterdamned!!!

Well, I ended up giving the whole print-of-Amsterdam a shot again.... I've had too many people (you know who you are) trying to convince me that an Amsterdam print would be more commercial, and blah blah blah. Of course they're right, but it's not what I feel passionate about, or even what I would buy, so the challenge has been to find some way to make it interesting for me as well as for a customer. My first attempt was done with a digital photograph, and I was really unhappy with the results. Not only was it boring to look at, I just really didn't consider it 'doing art' (whatever that means to you). I was making xerox copies, and it was just kind of dumb, as far as I was concerned. So this is my second attempt, hand-drawn and then hand-printed (silk-screen) by yours truly. Granted, this was Steven's idea, and he thought to make it interesting, I could do the print of Amsterdam, and then on a few I could add a little 'something' to make it interesting for myself (this is why there are tentacles in the images that you see - I also have quite a few that are 'monster-free'). The idea came from a Dutch movie made back in the '80's -something was killing people in the canals of Amsterdam, and the movie was called 'Amsterdamned'. I always envisaged some crazy tentacled monster pulling people into the canals and couldn't wait to see it. Sadly, it ended up being just a regular old serial killer wearing scuba equipment. I know, bummer, huh? Great name, great setting, and that's what you come up with? A disfigured twin in a scuba suit? C'mon, people. So this is sort of my fantasy of what 'Amsterdamned' could have been.....

Home on the Range

Still experimenting with different mediums - this one is a combination of inks, markers, and pastels used 'traditionally' and as watercolors. I like the control the markers and inks give, but i think the images end up feeling a little flat sometimes - so enter the pastels. Difficult for me to control, or get any sort of 'crispness' out of, but they do add a great texture, if one doesn't go overboard....

Well, this one came about when a friend challenged me to meld Cuddlefish and Chitty Chitty Boom Boom - so here it is, Heather. The Ursula o1! Named after that fantastically tentacled baddy from Disney's "The Little Mermaid" - c'mon, she was amazing. So this image is another blend of markers and india inks - for the water I tried to use some of my acrylics as water-color - I was reading on the back of one of the tubes this was a possibility and thought what better way to test out the waters.... pardon the pun. ugh.
Still trying to stay focused with a specific set of related images though, so once again, Steampunk inspired.....

Dame Hammink-Horstink

alright, so once again, it's not the best photograph... and yet again, I'll use the same old excuse that I'm just trying to keep myself moving.... until I get a scanner. Or a photographer. Or learn how to take a decent photo. Personally, I have a feeling that the most realistic is going to be the first option. But of course funds play an important role, and I really want a flatscreen TV. Sadly, I'm not really at a point where I should be affording either. So for now you'll have to deal with middling quality photographs taken by yours truly. Hopefully the work doesn't suffer too much in translation.

Yeah, yeah, still on the whole steampunk trip. Playing around with the idea of doing some sort of a webcomic with this aesthetic. Yes, I know what you're thinking; it won't happen until I get that scanner. Guess the large screen television will need to wait a little longer, huh?

Good God, am I the only person who seems to have this problem? Why can I not take a decent photo of anything? Well, so whatever, here are another couple of crappy ass photos of work that I've done. If I ever get my shit together and put up a website, perhaps I'll be a little more discerning of what images I use, but I'm gonna go back on my whole procrastination reason again; if I don't just post these now, it'll never get done. So these are a bit fuzzy, and the colors are off...
So a little while ago, I took a screen printing course, and over the last few months have been attempting to tweek my drawing style and create something that would translate well using my new medium. Well, I've had varying rates of success, mostly due to me being really, really challenged in the color-ing arena. And let's face facts, when you're working with a print that's only using two or three colors, choosing the right colors is important. Slowly I'm progressing. These latest images are my most successful, although there are still things that I see that I would and will change in the future....
So this one is called "Prosthesis"....

So I've always been mildly obsessed with Studio Ghibli (I think that's how you spell it), ever since a friend took me to see Princess Mononoke in the theater back in New York. And then of course I kept renting everything I could get my hands on. One that I went mild for in the beginning was Laputa, "Castle in the Sky". I dunno, something about the animation was a little too manga for me at the time, I guess. But as the years have progressed, I've just fallen more and more in love with it. Who knows, maybe it's related to my ever progressing love of Steampunk.... improbable airships, blimps, and steam power? Count me in.

Anyway, I finally broke down and bought it the other day... and since I'm still playing with markers, I sort of did an homage. The picture's crap, but I know that if I don't just post it my procrastination will kick in, and then it will never get done..... so hopefully you like it.

This was one of my first attempts at putting together a comic strip. It was done for a friend of mine before I moved away from San Francisco. I created a whole wall of Wonder Woman for him, and did alot of experimenting with different media, from pencils to pastels to computer-coloring and effects.

This was a series of images I did for a restuarant in San Francisco called "Night Monkey"... sadly the restaurant no longer exists... hopefully the art does, somewhere. The brief was once again for sexy women, but this time it was supposed to be all about the legs and the shoes. Once again, this was done in ink and then colored on the computer.

While still living in San Francisco, I was commissioned to do a series of "sexy, ample chested women". I wanted some sort of a theme, and for me whenever I can't think of anything good, I always return to the elements. I had two ideas for water, and she chose the redhead. I'm still torn over which I prefer. Thankfully, I don't have to choose. And in the end, her sister chose to keep the first "Water" for herself.
